Educational opportunities are plenty in this area as well. Colleges include Lees McRae College in downtown Banner Elk or Appalachian State University located in Boone 20 minutes away.  

Ski Resorts are a big attraction in the winter months with slopes opening around late October/ early November.  Resorts include Ski Beech, Sugar Mountain, Hawksnest , and Appalachian Ski Mountain. Many of these resorts offer golf and tennis in the warmer season.
